The Star House New Mexico

Ute Mountain in the background is one of the tallest free-standing mountains in the USA.

Star House From the AirIt’s quiet here because the highway is a mile away and there are no houses nearby.

clean star homeUnique in its simplicity, my home has clean, compact lines, and is elegant without being pretentious.

The entire first floor is a short term rental for 1 to 4 guests. (There’s a surcharge of $10 per night for each additional guest over 2.) This apartment has a kitchen, bedroom, living room with sleep sofa, bathroom with a walk-in shower, washer/dryer–(and an additional bathroom with a tub, which you’ll need as a second bathroom if there are 3 or 4 of you.)

I live on the second and third floors but I’m a writer and I write quietly. If you prefer total privacy, you can spend your whole time here and not even see me. That’s because you have your own driveway – just past my lifesize cow – and your own entrance and outdoor patio.

The Star House

Thank goodness the first floor is partially underground. It’s always cool at night in northern New Mexico but your part of the house is cool even on hot days.

Hiking:

Wild RiversBring your hiking boots: nearby Wild Rivers Recreation Area, which is part of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, has some challenging climbs.

The Monument is comprised of rugged, wide open plains dotted by volcanic cones, and cut by steep canyons with rivers tucked away in their depths. The Rio Grande carves an 800 foot deep gorge through layers of volcanic basalt flows and ash. Among the volcanic cones in the Monument, Ute Mountain is the highest.

Bedroom and Bath:

BedroomThe en suite bathroom features a built-in mahogany cupboard, walls lined with pine and mahogany and a walk-in shower with blue rocks on the floor. (Actually, they’re smooth tiles but they look like rocks.)

Bring your laptop if you like to write and email. There’s wifi as well as a printer for your use.

Kitchen:

Your kitchen is brand new: new fridge/freezer, new stove/oven, new counters and cabinets, new sink, new dishes and silverware. The Sangre de Cristos mountains peek in the big kitchen window.

Living Room:

Your living room window frames the garden bursting with flowers (in the summertime) and bluebirds love to perch on the fence and flirt with you. There’s a comfy wing chair for reading or you can watch Netflix on TV.

Outdoors:

Sit outside on your private patio and marvel at the dazzling sunsets.

This is the head and breast of my sleeping giant mountain
you’ll see from your patio. He also has a belly and toes.

Outdoors, your private patio has an iron bistro table and two chairs – and an umbrella, if it’s not too windy. Nearby is a fenced-in flower garden, where you can pick some flowers.

If you meditate (or even if you don’t), there’s a hidden path for you to follow toward the west where a quiet oasis awaits you. Bring the folding chair and sit under the pine tree.

Create art. Paint. Write. Hike. Raft. Meditate. You have your own private driveway, entrance & patio. Keypad check-in makes it easy for you.

Milky WayThis is MAGICAL country. Marvel at the spectacular sunsets and night sky! There’s no light pollution so you can even see the milky way.

Neighborhood:

NEIGHBORHOOD

Most of the people who live in this area are health-conscious and respectful of the planet. The Star House blends in with its surroundings, mimicking the color of the sagebrush.

The panorama from your patio starts with Colorado’s Mt. Blanca mountains to the north

and Sangre de Cristos mountains to the east (southern Rockies). This photo is taken from outside the front door of the Star House at sunrise.

peak view

Two of the largest free-standing mountains in north America are in front of you: San Antonio Mountain to the west and Ute Mountain (sacred to many native Americans) to the northwest.

A beautiful Tibetan Buddhist Temple, Stupa and Labyrinth are a half mile away to the south where teachings (Buddhist and wholistic) and retreats take place. The Latir Volunteer Fire Department is a half mile to the west.

Ski at Red River, Angel Fire or Taos Mountain.

Village of Questa is 8 miles from here; Wild Rivers Recreation Area, which is part of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, is 12 miles. Red River is 20 miles and Town of Taos is 32 miles.

And so…

– If you crave clean, pure air and clean, pure water…

– If you love beauty and appreciate the clean lines of an 8-pointed star-shaped house….

– If you have a deep connection with nature and want your soul nourished by the brilliance of planets and stars against a dark sky…

this is the rental for you.
